During this past All-Star weekend, Gatorade debuted a commercial showcasing the infamous Game 5 of the 1997 NBA Finals, also known as the legendary “Flu Game”. If you remember, prior to the game, Michael Jordan was diagnosed with food poisoning along with the flu. Long story short, despite his weakened body, Jordan ended up playing 44 minutes, and had a stat-line of a mere 38 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals and 1 block while leading the Bulls to a 90-88 win (they would win the series one game later). One of the most amazing performances in sports history! Very few individuals could have done what he did, hell, very few would have even attempted to play. How did he do it? It definitely had to be one of those intangible traits, or better yet, the will to “Win From Within”.
The commercial instantaneously took those of us who are mindful of that time right back to, not only that time, but that era. It looks as if Gatorade is starting a new campaign with these #WinFromWithin commercials, so I am excited to see what they have for us next. Gatorade did their thing on this one.
Of course, one cannot re-visit this game without discussing the Air Jordan XII Flu Game. Check out the pictures below (Courtesy of Footlocker):
