Live Music: Sole Vibes

You have to admit that there is just something about live music that moves any crowd. I spent my younger years in Youngstown, OH where choirs shared testimonies through song, my grandma’s siblings sung or played records and A tracks, and folks could be found outside crooning. I moved to Maryland where PG County rocked to GoGo, Baltimore jumped to house music and various cultures swayed to their own beats in Mo County. I remember not being old enough to attend a GoGo but wanting to experience the sound and party. Then, by the time I was old enough, I didn’t want to go. My brother, Ty, recorded for a lot of GoGo bands so it was dang near all I heard all day everyday. I grew tired of it. Then, the style changed. Finally, I moved to Georgia and craved the sound. The live sound that I craved so much. GoGo has to be experienced live but check this out. R.I.P. Chuck Brown, godfather of GoGo (1936-2012).

Going along with the percussion theme, my mom raised us around different types of music. We grew an appreciation for different styles and genres. So being the [self-entitled] Azonto queen that I am, I couldn’t help but be drawn to the drumming ministry as they played during my church‘s family and friends weekend.

If you missed it, you missed it. Why weren’t you there at Music in the Park? Kebbi Williams Presents Music in the Park was, as it was last year, amazing. Being a former violinist and self-taught percussionist, I’m partial to the orchestra. Sigh. This year I have a new favorite – Jalen Townser (drums) and Stanley Cunningham (piano). I was able to experience live music in my element, West End. Live music is the best music. You remember how your grandmother rocked to the choir in church and just waved her hand. Or maybe your grandmother played the tambourine…or the drums.  CDs are cool but they have a totally different vibe than concerts.

So the next time you pop open the cd case, think about getting the live experience. Take the lass out for a night out on the town. She will enjoy it and so will you. Below are two spots to enjoy live music. So “put your Gucci watch on and let’s rock”!
